Comments – how do you respond to them?

I really like getting comments so to everyone who comments on my blog a HUGE thank you! Today I was wondering is there some sort of blogger etiquette for responding to comments?

I’ve mostly been just replying to my comments as a comment itself (and generally about 2 days later) but I have noticed that a number of you actually send me a message about any comments I have left you.  And I really love that idea too.  Of course that only works when the person who has commented actually has a usable email address and not noreply@blogger.com for example.

So is there a rule, or a way of doing this that is right? Is there some thing some one does with comments that you think is really great? Or really poor form?  Ideas please people.  I really hope I’m not offending people by not replying straight away and not emailing you all individually.

Does anyone else do what I do and keep checking back (or subscribe to comments) to see if there is any response to something you have said?  Or am I just taking the blogging gig a little too seriously?

Maybe I should get Melissa to make me another button that says will comment for chocolate…

With blogger I just subscribe to comments on my blog {settings/comments/comment notification email} and I just reply to those emails as they come through. Some days I reply to all. Others just to special ones. Depends on my mood. But it gives me the option.

I don't think there is a hard or fast rule when responding.

I think that's pretty much the norm. I will sometimes respond to comments via email if there is an address to respond to but I always make it a point to visit the commenters blog and leave a comment on their last post because I know how much comments make my day. :)

One of my favorite parts of blogging is being able to comment back to someone when they have left me a comments. Even if I just say thank you. Sometimes I say more depending on the comment or if they ask a question. When I comment on a blog I don't go back to see if there was a response on that post. I follow and comment on too many each day to do that. Now people who are no-reply just gets me mad. If it is someone brand new to my blog I will go over to their blog and leave the comment but that can be time consuming so it's only new people I do that with. If the others want to be no-reply that they must not really care or they do it just to have people visit them but that gets old. I feel comments are where I have grown closest to people. To me commenting on a comment is important.

I am not really sure of the etiquette. I think everyone does something different. I tend to try and reply to the comments of the post, but sometimes I just forget or run out of time. I love when people comment because it lets me know who is actually reading my blog.
If I get time I go back to check if my comment on someone elses blog post has been replied to, but again, I usually run out of time for that!

Sometimes reply, sometimes not. Depends on the comments and if they ask questions.

Worry that I am big noting myself if I reply too much...

Ahhh...good it seems that I am fairly standard in the whole blogging and commenting thing.

It's great. Finally I'm vaguely normal! :)
